Records broken by the stacks at World Championships
10-year-old stacking phenom takes top honors

April 8, 2008, Denver , Colorado

The Denver Coliseum was filled with nearly 1,100 sport stackers and about three times that in spectators and volunteers at the 2008 WSSA World Sport Stacking Championships on April 5th and 6th. The headline stacker for the day was Steven Purugganan, a 10-year-old from Longmeadow, Massachusetts, who broke two overall world records and took home the trophy for Overall Champion. Purugganan hit a blistering 6.21 seconds in the Cycle during the Stack of Champions breaking his previous record of 6.50. He also set a new record for the 3-3-3 with a time of 1.86 seconds.

"What Steven did this weekend was nothing short of amazing," said Matt Reed, Executive Director of the WSSA. "He is a flawless sport stacker hitting times we never even thought possible. His practice, determination and focus have really paid off. Without question, he is the best sport stacker in the world right now, and what better place to showcase his talents than the World Championships."

With the help of Purugganan and the USA Sport Stacking team, American stackers reclaimed several titles and records from Team Germany, which dominated last year's World Championships. A USA win in the coveted Speed Stacks International Challenge was one of the tournament highlights.

Team Germany, which brought 39 stackers to this year's Championships, still had its share of the spotlight. The duo of Timo Reuhl and David Wolf set a new world record of 7.65 seconds in the Doubles Competition. The world record for the Timed 3-6-3 Relay was also toppled by German stackers. The new mark to beat is 13.19 seconds.

In addition to the US and Germany, six other countries were represented at this year's World Championships. They included: Canada, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Columbia, and the United Kingdom. American stackers represented 34 states, the most ever for a World Championships.

"We were extremely pleased with this year's turnout and how smoothly everything went," said Mark Lingle, WSSA Tournament Co-Director. "This is a unique event where more than 1,000 participants of all ages and abilities can compete, have fun and find success whether they break a record or not. Congratulations to everyone who participated, and thank you to all those parents, coaches and volunteers who made it happen. We are already looking forward to next year!"

The 2008 WSSA World Sport Stacking Championships:

included the SPEED STACKS International Challenge where the top stackers from different countries competed for top honors in the Head-to-Head Cycle Relay. USA Sport Stacking reclaimed the title in this event from last year's winner, Team Germany.

marked the return of Team USA Sport Stacking, which aimed to challenge the dominance of Team Germany at the World Championships.

continued to set the standard as the WORLD'S PREMIER SPORT STACKING EVENT with a sophisticated Computerized Scoring System and Leader Board, trained judges, video review, hundreds of medals and trophies State/Provincial, National and World Records sanctioned by the WSSA, as well as Guinness World Records.

featured some interesting story lines that include:

  • Steven Purugganan, a 10-year-old stacking phenom, hailing from Longmeadow, Massachusetts who has taken the sport stacking world by storm and reclaimed three individual world records for the USA, two of those set at this year's World Championships. His record setting times include a blistering 1.86 seconds for the 3-3-3, 2.34 seconds for the 3-6-3 and an amazing 6.21 seconds for the Cycle.
  • Team Germany had Steven directly in its sights as this world-class team looked to once again dominate the World Championships. Last year, Team Germany won every major event and currently holds the world record in the Timed 3-6-3 Relay. This year a strong showing from USA Sport Stacking evened out the field with both teams sharing overall honors.
  • Team Hazen in the Special Stackers Division from the state of Washington is truly special. This group of special needs stackers returned to the World Championships with fierce determination and heartwarming success stories.
  • Luree Copeland is a testament to the fact sport stacking cuts across all ages. Luree, a former PE teacher from Nebraska, who shared her stacking prowess on Live with Regis & Kelly, took home top trophies and medals in the Senior Division.

Sport Stacking is:

  • an exciting individual and team sport where participants stack and unstack 12 specially designed, high-tech cups (SPEED STACKS) in predetermined sequences at lightning speed.
  • where stackers race against the clock in 3 competitive stacks ( 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and Cycle) and race against each other in head-to-head relays.
  • a "track meet for your hands at warp speed!"
  • a sport that promotes hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity, quickness and concentration.
  • growing by stacks and stacks; it originated in the early 1980s in southern California (known as "cup stacking"), but has been transformed into a full-fledged sport governed by the World Sport Stacking Association, formed in 2001 in Colorado.
  • practiced in more than 24,000 schools and youth organizations around the world.
