The
2006 WSSA World Sport Stacking Championships are just a few short
stacks away, and WSSA organizers are moving at a rapid clip to
assure this year’s expected 1,000 competitors will experience
a tournament like no other. Here’s what you need to know:
EVENTS: Competitive
events include Individual, Doubles and 4-Person Team Relays in
a variety of divisions, which include all ages. Stackers compete
in the 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and Cycle stacks. In addition to age divisions
for kids, there are stacking opportunities for all other ages
including Collegiate (19-24), Masters (25-59) and Seniors (60
and above). There also is a Special Stackers division for competitors
with special needs.
REGISTRATION: The competitor
registration fee is $30 ($15 for Special Stackers). A $10 late
fee will be charged for all registrations received after March
24th. Only Individual and Doubles Competition Stackers may register
the day of the event—no team registrations. (Partial refunds
are available if a family member volunteers at the tournament.)
Registration forms are available online!

If
the measure of a sport’s success is coverage on the ESPN
sports network, then sport stacking has arrived. Pre-production
is currently underway for a one-hour television special on the
World Championships slated to be aired this summer on the ESPN
TV sports channel. The Denver Coliseum has been scoped out
and measured high and low to accommodate the multiple TV cameras
that will be on hand to cover every angle of the day’s
events. Set design for the Finals competition is taking shape,
background stories are being researched, and the day’s
schedule is being fine-tuned to maximize the stacking action
and capture the emotions and visual appeal of sport stacking. Whether you are a stacker or spectator,
come be a part of this year’s World Championships! Who
knows? You might even end up on TV! |

| There
will be several changes to this year’s World Championships
designed to streamline the events and provide more excitement to
participants and spectators alike. The Head–To–Head
Cycle Relays will operate with a new format. Teams
will be seeded for
the Cycle Relay based on their Timed 3-6-3 Relay Prelim time. Brackets
will then be established based on the seeding (think NCAA Basketball
Tournament) in a single
elimination format. This
will create more efficiency than in the past while also providing
for some exciting match-ups in the Cycle Relay event. (Note: The
Head-To-Head 3-6-3 Relays will remain a double elimination format.) The Timed 3-6-3 Relay is now an official event with finals involving
the top four teams in each division. To
help speed up the Individual Finals, each
division with its 10 finalists, will run two stackers simultaneously
at separate tables and independent of one another. This
year, in addition to Overall Individual Champion awards in the 3-3-3, 3-6-3 and Cycle stacks, we will also be crowning the Individual All-around Champion based
on the combined results of the three individual events. Finally, several competitors will qualify
to run a certain portion of their final events on stage in the “made for TV” Finals. Here we will feature several of the world’s
fastest sport stackers in a variety of final events. |

After proving they are their
country’s
best, four teams from Germany are expected to arrive in Colorado
in April and vie for bragging rights at the World Championship
level. The 2006 WSSA German National Sport Stacking Championships
were held on Saturday, March 4th in Butzbach drawing 270 competitors.
At the end of the day, several world division titles were broken
(pending video review) and the top German stackers came one step
closer to a strong showing on April 8th at the World Championships.
Japan set to hold first WSSA-sanctioned tournament
The WSSA is working with organizers in Japan to host the first sport stacking
tournament in that country. According to Tournament Director Tomoko
Taira, more than 100 stackers are expected to participate on March 19th. The
event will take place at Utase Junior High School in Chiba, which is located
just outside of Tokyo. Look for Japan’s top stackers to travel
to Denver to compete on April 8th. "We’re so excited to be
hosting the first WSSA-sanctioned tournament in Japan," said Taira. "Sport
stacking is really taking off here, and we hope to send some of our fastest
stackers to the World Championships in April!"
Japanese sport stacking FUN FACT
Not only will this be the first WSSA championship in Japan,
but it will be the first sport stacking tournament on record where
every competitor will be removing their shoes at the door. Really! |

| Teachers - Over 100 schools are signed
up to participate. Even though you may not have had a chance to
really build a sport stacking program at your school, we want to
encourage you to simply come and observe our 11th annual tournament.
This will give you the opportunity to see the potential of this
exciting sport at your school. If you are unable to attend, perhaps
you have some students who would like to come with their parents.
Please get the word out to them. They don’t need to be super
fast to participate. |
